Robin Hulce’s father Frank picked up this approach in the masonry business back in the 1950’s. Frank learned that taking the time to do a detailed and accurate bid before the work begins and searching for savings during the project led to very happy clients and lots of repeat business.
Frank
began passing his expertise in the building trades, estimating, and
work ethic when Robin was very young. At 11, Robin’s first project for
his father involved assisting the mason by cutting bags of mortar in
half with a shovel and moving a half a bag at a time with a wheelbarrow.
When Robin was 18, Frank put him on a hydraulic hammer to crush rock for six months. During this “prison work”, Frank remembers that Robin “never complained and had the ‘stick-to-it-iveness’ to complete the work and do a good job.” Frank watched Robin take his estimating principles into the computer age which allowed more detailed bidding with no need to keep the pencils sharpened. While working together on many projects for many years, Frank saw his son “pick up a lot of common sense knowledge and experience” and was “able to do everything faster and better” than he could.
Robin’s son Jason first showed his aptitude for the building trade when
he was just 5 years old. He was given a simple drafting kit and used
to draw a scale drawing of his house. Jason literally grew up riding
heavy equipment and helping his dad on jobs with increasing responsibility.
Jason and his wife Julianne are expecting their first child and hope
the H2
